Can I have a pet at Fair Haven?

When Peggy Batcheler and her husband moved to Fair Haven, a continuing care retirement community, or CCRC, in Birmingham, Alabama 25 years ago, they did not bring any pets with them. But more than a decade after Peggy’s husband passed, she found herself feeling like she needed something more, so she answered an ad in the newspaper and came home with Lulu.

“I took a chance on her, and she’s the best pet I’ve ever had,” said Peggy.

Lulu, a mixed terrier, is now 11 or 12 years old, and has become a well-loved member of the Fair Haven community.

“Lulu enjoys laying in the morning sun,” said Peggy. She even has a special dog bed that was built so Lulu can be as close to the window as possible, which you can see in the photograph below. Residents are so used to her looking out the window and watching the ‘goings-on’ in the parking lot, that if they walk by and don’t see her, they’ll often check in with Peggy to make sure Lulu is okay.

At Fair Haven, we understand that pets are an integral part of the lives of many Americans. Studies have shown the marked benefits of pet ownership, including decreasing cholesterol and feelings of loneliness, and increasing opportunities for socialization and exercise.

For residents who enjoy pets but don’t want one of their own, they can visit friends with pets, or stop and say hello when they see another resident and their dog walking around campus. For residents who are able to care for a pet, they are welcome to bring their small animals with them. This welcoming pet policy helps foster a feeling of comfort and community at Fair Haven.

“That’s what we’re about here. Trying to help people,” said Peggy. “It’s a good place to live.”
