At Fair Haven, we’ve been working hard constructing new buildings, and completely renovating existing ones, as we implement the Household Model of care. Earlier this month, the first guests moved into the brand new rehabilitation center, and now we’d like to give you a pictorial tour of the grand, new space!
The shared kitchen area overlooks the open-concept dining and living rooms. With stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, modern light fixtures, and a gorgeous tile backsplash, this is definitely a kitchen to write home about. Most importantly, though, is all of the delicious food that is being served from it! In the Household Model, meals are often served home-style, with guests joining together at the dining room table.
Fair Haven, a retirement community located in Birmingham, Alabama, recently revealed their brand new assisted living residences. In addition to updating the look and feel of the community, the new building represents a switch to the Household Model of care, which emphasizes person-centered care, providing residents with private apartments as well as shared living spaces, such as the kitchen and dining room. Residents moved into the new space recently, and had a lot to say about the changes!
“I love it – it’s beautiful, clean and nice! I just love it,” exclaimed Betty Howard, a Fair Haven resident for nearly three years. Continue reading “First Look & Resident Reactions: Fair Haven’s New Assisted Living Reveal”
After more than 55 years of providing quality care and enriching the lives of older adults in the Birmingham area, Fair Haven is nearly ready to unveil their newly built short-term rehabilitation center.
The rehabilitation center will feature a new model of care, the Household Model. Fair Haven and its sister community in Dothan are the first retirement communities to bring this revolutionary new model of care to Alabama. Instead of a clinical or hospital setting, a home-like setting is created for guests as they are healing in the new rehab center.
Guests will have their own private suite with private bathroom, and will share household spaces and amenities such as a modern kitchen, a comfortable den, a lavish living room, a bright sunroom, and family-style dining. A new therapy gym is located inside the rehab center for guests’ convenience.
The most notable aspect of the Household Model is the emphasis on each guest’s freedom to make choices regarding their own schedules, care and activities. With all the comforts of a real home, the camaraderie of other guests, and the support of knowledgeable staff 24 hours a day, Fair Haven’s rehabilitation center will help foster productive healing.
The new rehab center is part of a larger renovation project for the established community. Other updates to the campus include a new skilled nursing Household building, a new assisted living building, new independent living apartment homes, and a new specialty care assisted living rooms. While the new short-term stay rehabilitation center is set to open next month, other updates to the campus will reach completion by August of 2017.
Echoing through the newly renovated campus is Fair Haven’s proud commitment to providing faith-based, person-centered care in a welcoming and compassionate environment.

Fair Haven Releases Complete Rebranding of Its Community, Looks to the Future
Birmingham, AL – Fair Haven will release a complete rebranding of the community this month in conjunction with extensive campus construction and renovation and the release of a new name and logo last month to help move the community into a new era of senior care.
Fair Haven is celebrating 55 years of enriching the lives of older adults in Birmingham though rejuvenation for the modern era and by becoming the first continuing care retirement community in the state of Alabama to transition to the Action Pact household model of care. This revolutionary model of care, the focal point of their new brand, will be introduced to the community in January 2017. Residents who participate in this new model will live in an environment that looks and feels like home, with a private room and bathroom, sharing common spaces and activities with a close knit group of others. The freedom to make choices regarding their own schedules, care, and activities has been shown to help older adults live longer, more meaningful lives.
Thanksgiving is not just a holiday about the story of the first Thanksgiving, or all the decadent foods in which we get to indulge. At the core of Thanksgiving is a spirit of reflection and thanks.
Often, the minutiae of the day-by-day routine we fall into throughout the year can make us forgetful of the things we are truly thankful for: family, friends, and a warm and welcoming community to call home. This Thanksgiving, one Fair Haven resident shares his story and explains why he is thankful to live at Fair Haven.
Reverend Wayne Vickery, a retired Methodist minister, has lived at Fair Haven for over two years with his wife, for whom he is a caregiver. They have always lived together in the Birmingham area, and knowing about all the wonderful services that Fair Haven provides, knew it would be the right place to call home.
“Fair Haven has played a vital role in the Birmingham community for decades,” says Tom Kent, Executive Director. “This change is the next step in our continued progression through the years.”
The name change will drop the term ‘retirement community,’ leaving it simply as Fair Haven.
“Most people know us as a retirement community, but we’d really like to be known for much more than that,” says Christopher Tomlin, President and CEO of Methodist Homes of Alabama & Northwest Florida. “We also want to be known for the role our organization plays in the greater community.”
Fair Haven will celebrate National Assisted Living Week once again this year from September 11 through 17. The week of recognition, established by the National Center for Assisted Living, is in honor of the role assisted living plays in America, and how it affects seniors, their family members, caregivers and the public as a whole.
According to the National Center for Assisted Living, “the annual observance encourages assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the public about this distinctive aspect of long term care.”
During Assisted Living Week, Fair Haven celebrates by hosting small activities for residents throughout the week. They wrap up the week with a celebratory meal in the dining room, complete with live entertainment.
“We do it to celebrate the residents,” says Earnestine Thompson, Assisted Living Administrator.

Birmingham, AL – Fair Haven has recently gained an experienced new marketing director, Shanna Black. Black’s addition to the organization means expanded expertise in the marketing and sales departments within the retirement community.
Black brings nearly 8 years experience in the senior living field, and nearly 15 total years of experience in marketing and sales. She decided to take the position at Fair Haven after discovering her love of the industry in a previous role.
“Working with senior adults is a ministry. It’s something you’re called to do. It takes a lot of kindness and thoughtfulness and empathy. For those who are called to it, we can’t imagine doing anything else,” says Black.
Black has previously served as Executive Director at Town Village Vestavia Hills, Director of Admissions at Texas School of Business, and as Area Manager for LA Weight Loss Centers.
“Residents don’t live where we work,” says Black, “we work where they live. It’s a privilege to come to their home every day and work.”
