SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT & CEO, CHRISTOPHER TOMIN: The Chapel is a very important focal point at Fair Haven and we’re ready to refresh and renew this majestic worship space that still has the original 1960s carpet and seating. A team of residents has been assembled to affirm some decisions and make others about the renovations to the Chapel, and how to complete the funding for the project. Click here to read a letter from the Chapel Team. I encourage you to give serious and thoughtful consideration to participating in this project. They are offering naming or memorial naming opportunities that will be a permanent fixture of the community for what is likely to be the next 50 years! As of today, all of the $1500 stained glass sponsorships have been taken, but we still need your help! Here are some pictures of the Chapel as it looks before any work begins. I hope that these pictures help those of you who have not seen the Chapel in a while, or maybe have never seen it, to not only understand the beauty and value of what we have, but also to be able to envision what is to come! After an illness or injury that has landed you in the hospital, you just want to go home. But here comes the doctor, and she’s recommending you to an inpatient rehabilitation facility for a short while instead. Why? Can’t you get therapy at home? Well, yes, but straight home may not be the best choice for you, especially if you are age 55 or older.
Here are some of the reasons why your doctor may recommend you for a short-term stay in an inpatient rehabilitation community like Fair Haven in Birmingham, Alabama.
#1 – You and your family may not be able to care for your needs, yet. Bathing, getting to the bathroom, getting up the stairs to your bedroom, getting down the stairs to answer the door – these things look like insurmountable tasks at this point. Besides, everyone is exhausted, having been up at the hospital for several days. No one has been at the house making things ready and safe for your return home. When Peggy Batcheler and her husband moved to Fair Haven, a continuing care retirement community, or CCRC, in Birmingham, Alabama 25 years ago, they did not bring any pets with them. But more than a decade after Peggy’s husband passed, she found herself feeling like she needed something more, so she answered an ad in the newspaper and came home with Lulu.
“I took a chance on her, and she’s the best pet I’ve ever had,” said Peggy. Continue reading “Can I have a pet at Fair Haven?”
Meet Fair Haven resident Rick Nash. Rick was introduced to the Birmingham retirement community by his brother, who already had many ties to the residents and staff of Fair Haven through his church. Though the community welcomes people of all faiths, Fair Haven has deep roots in the Methodist tradition, which was an important aspect for Rick and his brother when searching for a retirement community.
Rick has lived at Fair Haven throughout the recent renovations and the change to the Household Model, and already, he’s seeing a benefit. Continue reading ““It’s Not Your Typical Nursing Home. It’s More.””

At Fair Haven, we’ve been working hard constructing new buildings, and completely renovating existing ones, as we implement the Household Model of care. Earlier this month, the first guests moved into the brand new rehabilitation center, and now we’d like to give you a pictorial tour of the grand, new space!
The shared kitchen area overlooks the open-concept dining and living rooms. With stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, modern light fixtures, and a gorgeous tile backsplash, this is definitely a kitchen to write home about. Most importantly, though, is all of the delicious food that is being served from it! In the Household Model, meals are often served home-style, with guests joining together at the dining room table.
Fair Haven, a retirement community located in Birmingham, Alabama, recently revealed their brand new assisted living residences. In addition to updating the look and feel of the community, the new building represents a switch to the Household Model of care, which emphasizes person-centered care, providing residents with private apartments as well as shared living spaces, such as the kitchen and dining room. Residents moved into the new space recently, and had a lot to say about the changes!
“I love it – it’s beautiful, clean and nice! I just love it,” exclaimed Betty Howard, a Fair Haven resident for nearly three years. Continue reading “First Look & Resident Reactions: Fair Haven’s New Assisted Living Reveal”
After more than 55 years of providing quality care and enriching the lives of older adults in the Birmingham area, Fair Haven is nearly ready to unveil their newly built short-term rehabilitation center.
The rehabilitation center will feature a new model of care, the Household Model. Fair Haven and its sister community in Dothan are the first retirement communities to bring this revolutionary new model of care to Alabama. Instead of a clinical or hospital setting, a home-like setting is created for guests as they are healing in the new rehab center.
Guests will have their own private suite with private bathroom, and will share household spaces and amenities such as a modern kitchen, a comfortable den, a lavish living room, a bright sunroom, and family-style dining. A new therapy gym is located inside the rehab center for guests’ convenience.
The most notable aspect of the Household Model is the emphasis on each guest’s freedom to make choices regarding their own schedules, care and activities. With all the comforts of a real home, the camaraderie of other guests, and the support of knowledgeable staff 24 hours a day, Fair Haven’s rehabilitation center will help foster productive healing.
The new rehab center is part of a larger renovation project for the established community. Other updates to the campus include a new skilled nursing Household building, a new assisted living building, new independent living apartment homes, and a new specialty care assisted living rooms. While the new short-term stay rehabilitation center is set to open next month, other updates to the campus will reach completion by August of 2017.
Echoing through the newly renovated campus is Fair Haven’s proud commitment to providing faith-based, person-centered care in a welcoming and compassionate environment.
