Dementia Q&A with Dr. Duxbury

Andrew Duxbury, MD, professor of clinical geriatrics at the University of Alabama Birmingham, is originally from Seattle, Washington. He earned his BS in chemistry and biology at Stanford University and his MD at the University of Washington. He did his post graduate training in internal medicine at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. While there, he developed an interest in the health of older individuals and did further fellowship training in geriatric medicine and was later asked to join the faculty at UC Davis in geriatrics. In the fall of 1998, Dr. Duxbury left the west coast to join the faculty of the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. His role there has been in community based geriatric care including his long affiliation with UAB Geriatrics Clinic, now housed at UAB Highlands Hospital. He also provides primary care through the VA house call program throughout north central Alabama. He is also medical director for a local hospice, and serves as a consultant to other groups interested in elder health. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Duxbury has been the editor of an audiotape educational course in geriatric medicine and has written an internet based advice column on elder care issues. He has a strong interest in the performing arts and their role in the health of seniors and has worked with numerous agencies to enrich the lives of senior adults through theatre, music and dance. He himself performs in plays and musicals, and is a member of both the Opera Birmingham and the Alabama Symphony choruses. He is a published playwright and film critic, a theatrical producer and director and has studied the flying trapeze.
